Dr. Neher’s Biophysics Laboratory for Innovative Drug Discovery successfully held the 5th Academic Committee Meeting

The 5th Academic Committee meeting of Dr. Neher’s Biophysics Laboratory for Innovative Drug Discovery was held on the morning of December 01, 2025. This meeting was held in an on-site venue and through a simultaneous online video conference room. Member of the Administrative Committee of Science and Technology Development Fund, Dr. Ip Kuai Lam; the President of Macau University of Science and Technology, Chair Prof. Joseph Hun-Wei Lee; Vice Presidents, Chair Prof. Paul Kwong-Hang Tam and Vice Presidents, Chair Prof. Jiang Zhi-Hong; Director of Dr. Neher’s Biophysics Laboratory for Innovative Drug Discovery, Prof. Erwin Neher; Chairman of the Academic Committee of Neher’s Lab, Academician Ding Jian, and other committee members attended this meeting.

During the meeting, Dr. Ip Kuai Lam, President Joseph Hun-Wei Lee, and Academician Ding Jian, delivered speeches, acknowledging the development of Dr. Neher’s Biophysics Laboratory for Innovative Drug Discovery. Prof. Erwin Neher, the director of the laboratory, conveyed confidence in the establishment of the laboratory, and its future.

Subsequently, Professor Vincent Kam Wai Wong, the executive director of the laboratory, reported on the progress of the laboratory.  Over the past year, under the leadership of Director Prof. Erwin Neher and Executive Director Prof. Vincent Wong, outstanding results have been achieved. Researchers from the Neher Lab authored 45 publications, with appearances in high-impact journals like Cell Research. In response to the development of Macau's science and technology industry, the laboratory has embarked on innovative research initiatives, actively promoting the industrialization and application of research accomplishments, resulting in significant outcomes. The laboratory has also successfully established two horizontal collaborations between the university and industry, accelerating the commercialization of research outcomes. Furthermore, the laboratory has forged extensive international collaborations, including in-depth partnerships with world-renowned institutions like the Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM). Regarding intellectual property, 14 patents have been filed and granted to the laboratory this year.

At the end of the meeting, the members of the academic committee engaged in in-depth discussions regarding the laboratory's development. They fully recognized the achievements of the laboratory and provided valuable suggestions, particularly in focusing on diseases related to ion channels and further enhancing the industrialization of research outcomes.

Professor Erwin Neher expressed his sincere gratitude for the committee members' support and suggestions. He stated that the laboratory would optimize its research direction and development strategy based on their feedback, striving for further breakthroughs in the future and making greater contributions to the development of innovative drugs in China.
